From LA to Shenzhen:
Teaching an international Family
by Adrian - HCE Teacher
Most HCE participants spend their entire trip in China, but mine was quite unique. My host father lived and worked in Shenzhen, but his wife and two children live in Los Angeles. Instead of bringing American culture to China, I lived in L.A. for two months helped the children adjust to life in America and the English language. For kids who grew up in China, it can be hard to adjust to the American educational system. I had a great time helping them make the transition into a different cultural and linguistic environment, and I loved helping them with school projects.
I studied business and I hope to start a company someday. This is a way for me to get used to the culture in China so my business can have an international scope.
After my time together with his family in Los Angeles, my host father asked if I wanted to come to China and be his private English tutor. I jumped at the opportunity and moved to Shenzhen. My experience here has been pretty incredible, to say the least. My host father is a very successful businessman and lives in an amazing house. He works non-stop, so we don’t always get in as much English practice we should, but he treats me like family and has taught lots about Chinese business culture. I studied business and I hope to start a company someday. This is a way for me to get used to the culture in China so my business can have an international scope. I’ve learned a lot here and I’m even starting to pick up some Chinese. I’ve also made some great friends and expanded my networks for future business endeavors. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to gain business and travel experience at the same time through HCE.Back to all stories
