This program is what you make of it
by Monique Ting - HCE Teacher
My name is Monique and I’m from New Jersey. I actually majored in English at college, so I knew teaching was going to be a part of my future. My parents were actually Chinese, so I can speak mandarin, but I was born and raised in America. I lived with a great host family for 5 months and helped my two host siblings with English.
Every weekday, I’d wake up early and help the children get to school, then I’d have free time until the children got out of school. When they got out of school, I’d go pick them up and help them with their homework. Even though I speak Chinese, I often pretended I couldn’t understand the children unless they spoke to me in English. This way they were forced to practice English to communicate with me and as a result their English improved dramatically. I really like playing Rugby, so I was really happy when I found a women’s Rugby team in Shenzhen. I had practice every week and Rugby practice kept me fit and active. I think it’s important to get outside, participate in activities, and make new friends.
This program is what you make of it. Come with an open mind and be pro-active and you’ll have a second family and plenty of wonderful new friends.
I actually liked being in Shenzhen so much I decided I didn’t want to leave. Soon I’ll be starting a new job in Hong Kong, but I’ll still be able to come to Shenzhen often to see friends, visit my old host family, and go to Rugby matches. This program is what you make of it. Come with an open mind and be pro-active and you’ll have a second family and plenty of wonderful new friends.Back to all stories
