You make your experience
by Monique Ting - HCE Teacher
I’m Monique, from New Jersey, USA. As a college graduate with a degree in English, I knew teaching was going to be a part of my future. My parents are Chinese, so I can speak Mandarin, but I was born and raised in America. I lived with a great host family for five months and helped my two host siblings learn and practice English.
Every weekday, after helping the children get to school, I enjoyed free time until their classes were over. When they finished, I’d pick them up and help them with their homework. Even though I speak Chinese, I often pretended I couldn’t understand the children unless they spoke to me in English. This forced them to practice English to communicate with me, and as a result their English improved dramatically.
All in all, the HCE program is what you make of it. Come with an open mind and be proactive, and you’ll find yourself with a second family and plenty of wonderful new friends.
I really like playing Rugby, so I was excited to find a women’s Rugby team in Shenzhen. Weekly practices kept me kept me fit and active, and helped me expand my social circles and make some great friends who showed me even more cool activities and parts of the city.
I loved being in Shenzhen so much that I didn’t want to leave. Soon, I’ll be starting a new job in Hong Kong, which is close enough that I can come to Shenzhen often to see friends, visit my old host family, and go to Rugby matches. All in all, the HCE program is what you make of it. Come with an open mind and be proactive, and you’ll find yourself with a second family and plenty of wonderful new friends.Back to all stories
