How to match host families

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” relationship, family, life. There is hard work, commitment, and personality compatibility.

At HCE, we interview and background check our fabulous host families as well as our participants, but what makes the perfect match?

Be Specific

Tell us what you like, what you don’t like. Tell us what your habits are, which qualities you appreciate and respect in people, and be honest. Let us know what annoys you, but also what about you can annoy other people. Do you forget to turn off the light when you leave a room? Are you shy at first but loud when you warm up? Hate dishes? Let us know! It’s okay. The more you can clarify about yourself and what you’re looking for in a host family the easier it will be for us to match you with a perspective family, and happier everyone will be. Tutoring hours are one thing, but it’s lifestyles and personalities and activities that will influence and shape your time in China, and we want you to have a good time.

Communicating your thoughts and concerns allows us to see the potential problems and work through them before they become problems.

Be open and be honest

Talk to us about what you like and what you need throughout the program. Tell the family how much free time you would like to have, the days you’d like to have off, travel plans, study goals, food preferences, religion, etc. Open conversations are the key to finding out if you are a good match. But don’t just be honest with us, be honest with yourself. Why do you really want to come to China? What do you want to get out of the program? Communicating your thoughts and concerns allows us to see the potential problems and work through them before they become problems.

Finding the “perfect” host family is a near impossibility, but finding a family that will love and appreciate you as much as you love and appreciate them is not. If you’re open and honest and specific with us, we will always be open and honest and specific with you. Relationships are partnerships, and we want to work with you to create the best homestay experience for you.
